After a quiet summer quarter, the arts scene at the 快活app is in full swing with the arrival of fall. Across campus, concerts, theatrical productions, art exhibits and more offer an embarrassment of riches for arts lovers.

Lamont Symphony Orchestra

Highlights of the fall season at the听听include the听Lamont Symphony Orchestra, in a concert saluting the centennial anniversary of legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein and featuring violinist and faculty member听Linda Wang (Oct. 9, free);听Lamont Opera Theatre鈥檚听鈥淎 Night at the Opera,鈥 featuring scenes from Donizetti鈥檚听鈥淟鈥檈lisir d鈥檃more,鈥 Verdi鈥檚听鈥淟a Traviata鈥澨齛nd Britten鈥檚听鈥淎 Midsummer Night鈥檚 Dream鈥 (Nov. 2,听free); and the听Lamont Jazz Orchestra, which is celebrating a recent high-profile performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival. 鈥淢iles Ahead鈥 will feature the music of Miles Davis and Gil Evans (Nov. 5, free). All concerts are in the Newman Center for the Performing Arts.

Lamont and the Newman Center also welcome five guest artists this season: pianist听Ashlee Mack,performing composer听James Romig鈥檚听鈥淪till,鈥 a solo work inspired by the collection at Denver鈥檚 Clyfford Still Museum (Oct. 11); trumpet soloist and chamber musician听Craig Morris,听with pianist听Rebecca Wilt听(Oct. 12); and University of Missouri Conservatory faculty pianist听Robert Weirich听(Nov. 16). Tickets for all guest artist performances are $10.

Camille A Brown

The Newman Center also hosts a concert series,听, featuring nationally touring performers. The series this fall welcomes choreographer听Camille A. Brownand her dancers听(Oct. 4); jazz guitarist听Pat Metheny听and his quartet (Oct. 17); the U.S. Army鈥檚听Jazz Ambassadors, playing a free concert (Oct. 20); Denver-based kids act the听Okee Dokee Brothers听(Nov. 4); Colorado鈥檚 own听Aspen Santa Fe Ballet听(Nov. 10鈥11); and the听Turtle Island Quartet听with pianist听Cyrus Chestnut听(Nov. 16). The concert series offers free and discounted tickets for faculty, staff and students.

For fans of the visual arts, 快活app has an on-campus gallery and an anthropology museum, as well as dedicated exhibit space in the Anderson Academic Commons.

Chicano

This fall, the听听hosts听鈥淎xis Mundo: Queer Networks in Chicano L.A.鈥听a traveling exhibition that explores the intersections among a network of more than 50 Los Angeles-based queer Chicanx artists between the late 1960s and early 1990s (through Dec. 2, free). The听Museum of Anthropology听in Sturm Hall, meanwhile, will open a new exhibit,听鈥淚ndigenous Futurisms,鈥听on Oct. 5. Featuring new artwork by Lakota/Cherokee comics artist Kristina M. Bad Hand and comics artist and game designer Elizabeth LaPens茅e, the show explores the relationship between pop culture and native life. Part of the 15th听, the free exhibit will be up through Nov. 16.

In the听,听鈥淏lazing the Trail: Colorado Jewish History鈥听and听鈥淪quare Dance in the American West鈥听are on display on the lower level, while听鈥淛acques Parker: The Mountaineer鈥檚 View鈥听鈥 showcasing pencil, ink, and watercolor works created by the machine gun squad leader and member of the 10th Mountain Division during his service in World War II 鈥 is mounted on the upper level near the Dean鈥檚 Suite.

Finally, 快活app鈥檚听theater department听offers two productions this fall.听鈥沦补惫补驳别/尝辞惫别,鈥听Sam Shepard and Joseph Chaikin鈥檚 collection of monologues on romantic love, is paired with Shepard鈥檚听鈥淩ed Cross鈥 Oct. 11鈥21 in JMAC Studios; and Neil LaBute鈥檚听鈥淭he Shape of Things鈥听plays Nov. 1鈥11 in the Newman Center鈥檚 Byron Theatre.
