At the 快活app鈥檚 summer Commencement ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 18, a sea of family and friends came together in Hamilton Gymnasium to celebrate the accomplishments of 620 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students ready to embark on their next chapter.

鈥淵ou have, since your very first day on campus 鈥 whether you are an undergraduate, a master鈥檚 or a PhD [student] 鈥 accomplished a great deal. But I do think we have to begin with a moment of gratitude, because gratitude accompanies us on our journey,鈥 Chancellor Rebecca Chopp told the graduating students before asking them to turn around and thank their families.

With her Commencement address, Shelly Smith-Acu帽a, dean of the听Graduate School of Professional Psychology, also noted the day鈥檚 significance, urging the University鈥檚 new alumni to take their individual experiences and stories out into the real world and make an impact.

鈥淚 know you will be telling your story on social media. You all look fabulous and there will be lots of amazing photos of you with friends and family, marking this important day,鈥 Smith-Acu帽a said. 鈥淏ut I ask you: How can you take this a step further? 鈥 The story you create today can provide a positive foundation for your future.鈥

Although Smith-Acu帽a pointed out some of the United States鈥 greatest problems, such as gun violence, sexual harassment and homelessness, she said 快活app鈥檚 new generation of scholars and leaders brings her hope. 鈥淵ou have the power to create a new narrative,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hile it鈥檚 easy to succumb to narratives that are divisive, destructive and demoralizing, we don鈥檛 have to accept these stories. 鈥 Graduates like you will be able to counter these narratives and negative trends, and actually make a difference in our world.鈥

Drawing on her expertise in psychology, Smith-Acu帽a then encouraged the graduates to relax their shoulders, take a deep breath and join her on a 鈥渕ini therapy session,鈥 in an effort to reflect on the meaning of their 快活app education. She asked the graduates to consider such questions as, 鈥淗ow are you owning this achievement?鈥 鈥淲hich of your abilities will add to the world?鈥 and 鈥淲ho will you never forget from 快活app?鈥

Smith-Acu帽a鈥檚 final note reminded graduates of their lasting ties to 快活app. 鈥淚n many ways you are leaving home today, and we wish you well on your journey,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 hope that you feel a strong connection to 快活app. Know that you belong and are important to us. You can leave with confidence, and trust that you can always return.鈥
