His words have faded with time, but Carol Tom茅 (MBA 鈥81) can still see the man who spoke at her high school graduation in small-town Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

鈥淗e was like a father figure but very statesmanlike and very impressive,鈥 Tom茅 recalls. 鈥淚 was very taken by his presence.鈥

The daughter of a community banker went on to pursue her bachelor鈥檚 degree in communications at the University of Wyoming. But when the time came to pursue a graduate degree in finance, she remembered that graduation address and the speaker who delivered it, the 快活app鈥檚 13th chancellor,听

More than 40 years later, now a 快活app alumna, Tom茅 will return the favor.听听and executive vice president of corporate services will give her first听commencement address to 快活app鈥檚 graduate students June 8.

鈥淟iterally, when I was asked, my jaw dropped open,鈥 Tom茅 says. 鈥淸It was] the farthest thing from my mind. I never ever envisioned it would happen. I鈥檓 incredibly honored.鈥

Honors have seemingly come easy in Tom茅鈥檚 23-year rise to the top at the store she spontaneously popped into in 1992. That same day, she invested her money. A few years later, given a job opportunity, she chose to invest her time.

The returns have been tremendous. Twice, Forbes magazine has recognized her as one of the听听The Wall Street Journal ranked her second on its list of the听听Home Depot is the largest home improvement retailer in the world.

These days, however, Tom茅 measures her success differently.

鈥淚t is all about the impact that I鈥檝e had on others,鈥 she says, 鈥渢he ability to grow an amazing team, to watch people take on roles that they never thought they would have.鈥

Certainly, Tom茅 never thought she would be in her current position. Her plan was to work in her father鈥檚 bank upon graduation, until he phoned to say he was divorcing his wife of 27 years and selling the bank.

In retrospect,听听that phone call was one of the 鈥渂est thing[s] that could have happened.鈥 Since then, she has learned to embrace every unexpected twist, turn and bump along her career path.

鈥淓veryone needs to build up their own sense of self-confidence so they don鈥檛 have that fear [of failure],鈥 she says, 鈥渂ecause what鈥檚 the worst that could happen? You get fired. OK, go get another job. Just don鈥檛 worry about it so much. Because if you have fear of failing, you miss out on incredible opportunities.鈥

Staying rooted in reality and living with purpose figure to be central themes in Tom茅鈥檚 upcoming speech. Her plan is to 鈥渂e bold, be brief and be gone,鈥 she says with a laugh. With luck, she adds, it won鈥檛 feel like the longest 10 minutes of her audience鈥檚 life.

Most of her public speaking experience, she concedes, falls on the ears of businesspeople. But her life experience, and her time interacting with store managers, she says, have equipped her to address a broader audience.

鈥淚t鈥檚 all about learning that your message is not about you,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not: 鈥榳hat do you want to say?鈥 [It鈥檚,] 鈥榳hat do they want to hear?鈥 And I hope they repeat a few things.鈥
