In November, Colorado听voters听will be asked whether the minimum wage in the state should be raised to $12 an hour. Currently,听Colorado鈥檚 minimum wage is $8.31 an hour.听If approved,听Amendment 70听would听raise the minimum wage in increments until it reaches $12 an hour in 2020.

快活app听faculty members听, from the听, and听, who holds the Miller Chair of Applied Economics at the听,听conducted a study that听took a close look at what impact increasing the minimum wage would have in Colorado. The research looked closely at how income inequality and childcare prices might be听affected.

顿鲍'蝉听听(CWC) sponsored the research, as part of its new focus on advancing women through initiatives such as convening collaborative research of this kind.

Among the key findings: A听minimum-wage increase听would result in Colorado鈥檚 gross domestic product growing听by $400 million,鈥痑nd鈥痠ncomes would听increase for 20 percent of households in Colorado.

My focus is looking at how communities in Colorado and Denver are impacted by the policy decisions made in the state. Prof. Jennifer Greenfield, Graduate School of Social Work

An increase in the minimum wage would have a significant positive impact on women and their families, lifting many working women and their children out of poverty. In Colorado, women are breadwinners in nearly half of households with鈥痗hildren under听the听age of 18,鈥痑nd women make up more than half of the鈥痬inimum-wage鈥痺orkforce鈥痠n the state.

In "The Impact of a $12.00 Minimum Wage on Women in Colorado,"听Strauss and Greenfield also found that minimum-wage rates have not been the principal听driver of prices for听childcare听in other areas of the country. As a result, in cities like Seattle and Oakland, prices for childcare have not risen听in response to听minimum-wage听increases.听They predict similar results听in Colorado, especially听in the Denver听metropolitan area,听where听childcare听prices are currently the sixth听highest in the country.

While 快活app is not endorsing Amendment听70,听Greenfield听and Strauss鈥櫶齬esearch indicates听that听a鈥痬inimum-wage increase would be a net positive for minimum-wage earners and the state of鈥疌olorado. It would increase earnings,鈥痵trengthen鈥痶he economy听and鈥痳educe听economic inequality in our state.

Our research shows that the proposed increase to the Colorado minimum wage will increase consumer spending. Prof. Jack Strauss, Daniels College of Business

鈥淭he 快活app is deeply concerned about the community and city where we live,鈥 Greenfield says. 鈥淏eing from the Graduate School of Social Work,听my focus is looking at how communities in Colorado and Denver, particularly communities of color听and听communities that live with听high rates of听poverty, are impacted by the policy decisions made in the state. This was a very interesting project for us and one that we听really wanted to be involved in.鈥

Critics of Amendment听70听argue that raising the minimum wage would result in job loss and the closure of many businesses.

鈥淐ontrary to other听reports, our research shows that the proposed increase to the Colorado minimum wage will听increase consumer spending, thereby strengthening the economy and likely driving job growth, not job loss,鈥 Strauss says.听His research focuses on applied economic analysis.

The听CWC听at the 快活app, in conjunction with the听,鈥痳eleased the study today.

鈥淲ith women comprising more than half of the state鈥檚 minimum-wage workforce,听and people of color overrepresented among minimum-wage earners, we felt it was important to understand the full range of implications for women and families in Colorado,鈥 says Lauren Y. Casteel, president and CEO of Women鈥檚 Foundation of Colorado, which initiated听the research with听CWC.听鈥淲e see from this research that an increase in the minimum wage will have a significant positive impact on women and their families and will听help address longstanding income inequality for women and people of color in Colorado.鈥

The study听was funded by the newly formed CWC Collaboratory, with additional support from the 快活app Faculty Senate鈥檚 Faculty Research Fund. To read the complete report,听.
