Underscoring the 快活app鈥檚 impact on the Mile High City, Westword鈥檚 2019 Best of Denver Awards, which were announced last week, boast several 快活app connections.

In the Best Sophomore Novel by a Colorado Writer category, the alternative newsweekly recognized alumnus (BA 鈥14), whose second novel, 鈥渨ater & power,鈥 is based on his experiences in the Navy. Dunn鈥檚 debut novel, 鈥淧otted Meat,鈥 which was nominated for a 2017 Colorado Book Award, was inspired by his childhood in an impoverished West Virginia town.

Another 快活app alumnus was honored by Westword in the Best Neighborhood Retail District category: Stanley Marketplace, founded by (MBA 鈥11), was praised for its strategically planned mix of businesses, 鈥渇rom barbecue to bagels and beer to boutiques, not to mention a yoga studio, nail salon, cooking school, co-working space, restaurants and countless other amenities.鈥

Two 快活app alums were recognized for their contributions in food and drink: Adam Schlegel (BSBA 鈥99) and Denver chef Alex Seidel nabbed a Best Fast-Casual Concept nod for their new charcoal-broiled chicken restaurant, Chook, while the Denver Milk Market food hall, owned by restaurateur (BSBA 鈥90) was honored as Denver鈥檚 Best Chicken-Pizza-Crepes-Ramen-Poke-Sandwich-Pasta-Seafood Restaurant. 鈥淓very bite of fried chicken, every slurp of soup, every stacked sandwich comes from the mind of one of the city鈥檚 most prolific restaurateurs,鈥 Westword writes.

Alumni also were recognized in the awards鈥 Readers鈥 Choice section, where Park Burger 鈥 whose president is alumnus Peter Newlin (MBA 鈥11) 鈥 was called out for best hamburger and best French fries, and the Best Fast-Casual Concept award went to , co-owned by Christian Anderson (BSBA 鈥05) and Derek Nelson (BA 鈥04). Adam Schegel was honored once again as Snooze 鈥 founded by Adam and his brother Jon Schlegel (BSBA 鈥97) 鈥 was named by readers as Best Breakfast Spot, and Nocturne, owned by (BSBA 鈥03, MBA 鈥12) and her husband, Scott, was hailed by Westword readers as the city鈥檚 Best Jazz Club.
