Pioneers are favorites to win Big East Conference

News  •

For years, it鈥檚 been a battle to get the 快活app on the map for college lacrosse. It wasn鈥檛 until 2015 that 快活app men鈥檚 lacrosse finally became the first team west of the Mississippi to win the national championship. Now the believes it鈥檚 their turn to make some noise in college lacrosse.

鈥淥ur goal is as high as you can go,鈥 says senior . 鈥淲e want to win that national championship. We know that we can compete with the best teams. We are one of the best teams, and we just want to show that we鈥檙e not an underdog and that we can compete at that level.鈥

The Pioneers are coming off a season where they made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four years and reached the second round of the tournament for only the third time in program history. They now enter 2019 ranked in the top 25 in the country and are projected to finish first in the Big East Conference.

鈥淚 like that we are getting the pre-season respect from both the other coaches and the media,鈥 says head coach . 鈥淣ow we have to put our money where our mouth is and get busy with some games.鈥

Kelly, now in her 12th season as head coach, has never had a losing season at 快活app and has led the program to all three NCAA Tournament victories. Her message to the team this year has been simple:听had they won just three more games last year, they would have been playing for the national championship.

鈥淲e鈥檝e always fostered that idea that we have to do more, we have to take that extra step,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 think that as long as you always stay hungry, that next step 鈥 whether it鈥檚 a conference championship or a national championship 鈥 it鈥檚 only going to come if you do better.鈥

快活app opens the season this weekend with games at Stanford and the University of California-Berkeley. The difficult matchups don鈥檛 end there, with at least four more ranked opponents on the schedule, including No. 5 Stony Brook. The Pioneers believe they are ready for the challenge.

鈥淚 think that we are even stronger this year,鈥 says Lanuza. 鈥淭he past few weeks all we鈥檝e been doing is playing each other, so finally having the opportunity to play someone else will be great, and we are excited to get the season started.鈥
