Holiday Performances Coming to 快活app鈥檚 Newman Center

Most of the 快活app campus quiets down during winter break, but at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts, the holiday season means a full slate of dance, music and theater performances. Read on to see what鈥檚 on tap for November and December at the venue.

One of the season鈥檚 most powerful performances is bound to be a production of听鈥淎 Christmas Carol鈥澨performed, designed and produced by 40 incarcerated women from the Colorado Department of Corrections. The show鈥攚hich has performances on Dec. 12 and 13鈥攊s part of 快活app鈥檚听Prison Arts Initiative, which brings the healing power of the arts to incarcerated men and women across the state.

The Newman Center Presents concert series, which brings big-name touring acts to the venue throughout the academic year, has two Christmas concerts on its schedule this year: Pianist听David Benoit听presents 鈥淎 Charlie Brown Christmas鈥 on Dec. 12; and the听Five Browns, a quintet of siblings who perform Christmas classics and other favorites on five grand pianos, appear on Dec. 19.

There鈥檚 no escaping 鈥The Nutcracker鈥 during the Christmas season, and local dance companies have rented the Newman Center for their Claras, Rat Kings and Sugar Plum Fairies. Dance groups bringing their 鈥淣utcrackers鈥 to the center include听Denver Ballet Theatre听(Dec. 6鈥7);听International Youth Ballet听(Dec. 6鈥7); and听Moth Poetic Circus, whose acrobatic 鈥淣utcracker Circus鈥 takes the stage Dec. 20鈥22. Also on the dance slate is 鈥淪nowed in at the Theatre鈥 (Dec. 15), a winter recital by听Cherry Creek Dance.

Music will fill the air at the Newman Center all season long, as well鈥攁mong the concerts are听Young Voices of Colorado鈥檚听鈥淎 Gift of Love鈥 (Dec. 8); a winter showcase from the youth and adult ensembles at Voices Rock听(Dec. 9); men鈥檚 a cappella chorus听Sound of the Rockies,听with its 鈥淭he Secret of Christmas鈥 concert (Dec. 13鈥14); and the听Denver Brass鈥听鈥淭was the Brass Before Christmas鈥 (Dec. 21鈥22).

All of the holiday fun isn鈥檛 happening at the Newman Center 鈥 across campus, the annual Carillon Holiday Recital, featuring 快活app鈥檚 Carol Jickling Lens and four special guests on the giant bells, is at 3 p.m. Dec. 8.

Finally, in what鈥檚 become a season-ending tradition at the Newman Center, the听Whiffenpoofs 鈥 Yale University鈥檚 venerable men鈥檚 a cappella group 鈥 performs in Gates Concert Hall at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 4.

鈥淭he holiday lineup at Newman Center this season is spectacular,鈥 says Kendra Whitlock Ingram, executive director of the performing arts complex. 鈥淔rom jazz favorites to 鈥楴utcracker鈥 productions, we鈥檝e got something for everyone in the community鈥攊ncluding an amazing performance with five pianists playing together. We鈥檙e especially proud to host the first on-campus performance of the 快活app Prison Arts Initiative鈥檚听鈥楢 Christmas Carol,鈥 which is a great match with 快活app鈥檚 emphasis on public good and social justice.鈥
