A 快活app conference shines the spotlight on John Williams and his masterpiece

Chances are you won鈥檛 find it battling 鈥淭he Great Gatsby鈥 or 鈥淭o Kill a Mockingbird鈥 for shelf space at your neighborhood bookstore. But no less an authority than The New Yorker calls it

This year 鈥淪toner鈥 turns 55, and as alumna Sally Stitch (BA 鈥72) sees it, it鈥檚 high time that the book and its author, (BA 鈥49, MA 鈥50), get some serious love.

鈥淭his man needs his due,鈥 Stitch says of Williams, who once directed 快活app鈥檚 creative writing program and who won a National Book Award for his 1972 novel 鈥淎ugustus.鈥

With dispensing that due in mind, Stitch and another Williams fan, Sally Kurtzman, have collaborated with to stage a half-day 鈥淪toner鈥-centric Zoom conference on Saturday, Oct. 24. Titled 鈥淭he Undeniable Genius of John Williams: 鈥楽toner鈥 and the Man Who Wrote the Perfect Novel,鈥 the program showcases the late writer鈥檚 life and masterpiece, penned while he taught at 快活app.

Although she studied at 快活app while Williams was on the University鈥檚 creative writing faculty, Stitch qualifies as a new recruit to his fan club. 鈥淸Several] months ago, a good friend of mine said, 鈥榊ou have to read this book. It鈥檚 by [a former] 快活app professor.鈥 And so I did, and I was blown away by the writing,鈥 Stitch says. 鈥淚 thought the writing was transformative. It was incredible; it was so beautifully done in such lean prose. I got done reading it, and I could not forget about it.鈥

For people new to 鈥淪toner,鈥 the conference offers an immersive program that covers Williams鈥 philosophy of writing and the book鈥檚 artistic achievement. For 鈥淪toner鈥 fans, the conference provides the chance to mingle with and learn from scholars and writers who worked alongside Williams and from admirers tuned to his distinctive voice.

Look for keynote speaker Alan Prendergast, author of a celebrated about Williams, to offer a critical look at the 鈥渁ustere and subversive storytelling鈥 found in 鈥淪toner.鈥 William Zaranka, a former 快活app provost who knew Williams personally, will speak about the novelist鈥檚 thoughts about his artform. Anne Marie Candido, who organized Williams鈥 special collection at the University of Arkansas, will reflect on the book itself and on Williams鈥 final months. And W. Scott Howard, editor of Denver Quarterly, will talk about Williams鈥 legacy related to 快活app鈥檚 highly regarded literary magazine. 听

And look for all the speakers to ponder this question: Just what makes 鈥淪toner鈥 the perfect novel? After all, that adjective isn鈥檛 tossed around cavalierly in literary circles. But according to noted critic Morris Dickstein, whose 2007 argued that 鈥淪toner鈥 merits the superlative, 鈥淪toner鈥 qualifies as 鈥something rarer than a great novel鈥攊t is 鈥 so well told and beautifully written, so deeply moving, it takes your breath away."

Stitch, too, considers the book practically, if not completely, perfect. And it鈥檚 not the plot that merits her kudos.

鈥淚 have to think it鈥檚 the writing [that makes the book so astonishing], because the plot is fairly depressing,鈥 she notes.

To say the least. In his 2010 about Williams, Prendergast distills the 鈥淪toner鈥 plot down to a single sentence: It鈥檚 鈥渢he story of an obscure university professor, a teacher whose life and career are steeped in disappointment and failure.鈥 But with its restrained prose and compelling narrative arc, Dickson argues, 鈥淪toner鈥 reveals 鈥渨hy this unassuming life was worth living鈥: This is the story of an ordinary man, seemingly thwarted at every turn, but also of the knotty integrity he preserves, the deep inner life behind the impassive facade.鈥

For all the critical claim it enjoys now, 鈥淪toner鈥 didn鈥檛 fare well when it was first published. It debuted in 1965, only to fall out of print a mere year later. In 2005, more than a decade after Williams鈥 1994 death, reissued the novel, which was then translated and published throughout Europe. To the surprise of even the book鈥檚 most ardent American devotees, it became a bestseller in the Netherlands, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. With the book鈥檚 cult following on the rise, rumor has it that a is in the works.

Stitch hopes that the Williams conference will give 鈥淪toner鈥 fans from far and wide a chance to learn more about the book and to revel in the pleasure it provides. 听

鈥淵ou can tell when you鈥檙e talking to somebody who has read it,鈥 Stitch says, 鈥渂ecause they light up and they鈥檙e dying to talk about it.鈥
